Heading in that morning felt strange to her, she was back on the ambulance but now she had a new partner and a new rig. It was a lot of new for one day she thought but at least she was still at fifty one, a new house on top of everything else was just going to be too big a leap for her given how things had changed over the past few years. She had finally gotten to do the job she had her heart set on and now her life had changed and her heart was back with the ambulance for a simple case of safety.
She had other priority now though it was all swimming around her head when she pulled on her old, new uniform. It was like stepping into the familiar with a good dose of the unfamiliar along with it. Gabby had deliberately avoided the rota’s other than to note her working hours, it was to give her the advantage of not knowing who her new partner was until the last minute. She knew what she could be life and frankly putting herself off or talking herself out of it was going to be a headache she could hardly afford.
Gabby just walked into the kitchen area and headed straight for the coffee machine. It was the life source of the entire house that machine. The thing that made any day better as she held the hot mug in her hands as she took a seat at the table and set about reading one of the various magazines there as she waited to see who would be her partner for the day. Really how bad could it be she wondered praying that she had managed to avoid the draw for a cover paramedic because those were the ones who could never keep a house or a partner.

"I can see clearly now the rain is gone....I can see all obstacles in my way..."
He was half singing to himself and half humming as the walked into the firehouse, it was another day, another shift, and oddly enough he was looking forward to his shift, even if he ended up just sitting and doing nothing because he still did not have anyone to be his partner. Peter Harris and partners was starting to become a bit of a joke, mostly because it seemed like he couldn't keep one and that no one wanted to be his partner..when in actually came down to the cycle of schedules and him always getting the short end of the stick. Peter walked to his locker and tossed his jacket inside and grabbed his uniform jacket, after changing into his work boots he grabbed his backpack which he usually carried with him on the ambulance and then turned and headed outside to do his pretrip. Even if his ambulance in particular did not go on any calls that shift, he still liked to check on things and make sure they all were in order.
After a bit he decided that nothing had changed from the last time that he had checked everything, Peter headed back inside, this time his goal was grabbing something to eat. So the kitchen was his goal, thankfully it was not busy because he did not want to have to fight his way to the fridge. Entering the kitchen he headed towards the fridge, "It's gonna be a bright...bright...sunshineyday..." he sang softly to himself. Pulling the fridge door open he leaned down to investigate what was inside. Everyone labeled their food, and it was a respected rule that you don't eat someones else stuff, but that did not stop him from occasionally taking a bite out of his sisters stuff, just to be a loving sibling.
His eyes came across an apple...more so a bunch of apples sitting on a shelf, so that was what he grabbed. Standing up, he pushed the door shut and took a bite of his snack all at the same time, it when also then that he noticed the person sitting at the table reading. "Anything good?" he asked as he took another bite out of the apple.

It was nice to be back in a sense even if pulling on the wrong uniform felt like she was putting on the wrong thing even though it was the safer of the two options. She had accomplished her dream, she had for a brief time become a fire-fighter and frankly she was proud of that. Now she was back to being a paramedic because it was the safer option of the two and when children were involved it made any choice like that a lot simpler than it might have been a year or two ago. She was now back in the same place, with a good knowledge of what she needed to do and this time it was like stepping back into the known.
Gabby glanced up from the magazine she had been reading hearing some random guy singing. Who was honestly that happy to be in work? Sure she was but she was a nervous happy as she gave him a sideways glance as he passed and headed toward the fridge. She checked his uniform and sure enough, paramedic. Oh she swore if he was the happy singing type she would strangle him on first call out she thought praying that she had been attached to anyone else for the day other than him. Was she really going to be that lucky? Yes, yes she was she had to be as she considered the song he was singing, she could see clearly that she might be clamouring to get out of the rig after five minutes.
Yes she could see that. She watched him at the fridge, food was a sacred thing and each shift had their own each labled and if you touched another person’s food. Oh there was nothing anything anyone could do to stop that fight from happening, it was an unwritten rule of the house. Same with candidates, newbies and every other rule they had about pranks, washing, dishes there were a few but at least this guy seemed to respect the rules of the fridge she thought as she went back to reading her magazine.
It was a gossip rag about the latest celebrity happenings, who was with whom, the affair that everyone was talking about and that movie that no one wanted to see had actually done well at the box office. All things that would help her fulfil her life and make her a more rounded person or just give her the scoop on what might or might not be going on. Gabby looked up at the guy eating the apple when he spoke. “Oh sure loads in there... like did you know that Angelina Jolie got her nails done at that salon across town last time she was here?” Gabby asked grinning as she relaxed back into her seat and dropped the magazine onto the table. “Enjoying the food?” She asked him as she was still trying to make her mind up if he was her partner for the day or if she would escape the singing.

"Yeah, I heard something about someone famous being in town at some point. I have a sister who loves that type of stuff, so anytime we talk she mentions it." Peter shook his head, "Oh did you see so and so, they were in town for such and such!" he added in a high pitch voice, it was an attempt to minic his sister and how fast she talked when excited. "Then again, isn't there always someone famous in town?" he asked as he took a bite of his apple again. “Enjoying the food?” He shrugged, "It's getting the job done for now, might grab another one here shortly since this one is about done." he looked at the apple in his hand, there were a few more good bites left before he'd toss it in the trash. "My name is Peter Harris by the way, I'd shake your hand but it's a little appley right now." taking one last bite of his snack he then turned and tossed it into the trash.

Gabby raised her brow as the guy spoke about hearing something about it, instantly she glanced down to his nails wondering if she had missed a pretty big something. “Ah right.” She said with a grin, “Thought for a minute you were the salon type there, I mean you’re more than welcome to join the ladies from the house on out next girl’s night if you want. You can catch up on all your celebrity gossip then?” She offered grinning at him for a moment as she chuckled at his high pitched voice. “It’s always good to know where they go, mostly so I can avoid the price hikes afterward.”
She had never been one for spending much time hovering around the salons, an afternoon of pampering yes it was nice occasionally but as a regular thing. No she would likely break a nail in the ambulance anyway so why make the inevitable choice to have them put on in the first place. “I think so but unless you’ve got the inside scoop or they take a coronary I doubt that us normal folks get to see them.” She said though if they ended up in the back of the ambulance then it was likely a little more serious than a broken nail.
Gabby watched as he took the few good bites and then tossed it in the trash. “Gabby Daw...Casey.” She said still getting used to her married name as she held up her hands. “Don’t worry Appley, nice to meet you.” She said grinning as she sat back and thought for a moment, “You know there are far better things in that fridge than apples right?” She offered deciding that making friends might be the better idea than completely alienating people but with her she could do either with a scary ease.
“Wait a second... Harris, you related to Stephanie Harris?” She asked, if there was another Harris then this was about to get very interesting. How had she missed this if it was true, was there really a better day to get back to work and be in the ambulance when she had the gossip of the house to catch up on and the potential brother, sister, fire house thing too.

[attr="class","bsmain"] [attr="class","bsimg"] [attr="class","bslyric"] [attr="class","bslmarg"] [attr="class","bsltmarg"]SUNSHINE MIXED WITH A LITTLE HURRICANE[attr="class","bsbody"]Peter laughed and shook his head as the mention of him joining the ladies on a girls night out, "No...I think I will let them have their time." he did not mention that at the moment he was taking a break of sorts from women, even though his reasoning behind it was weird. "I've never gotten my nails done, my mom had taken my dad a few times in the past." of course it had taken several rounds of debating to even get him to go the first time, after that Jim was more than willing to go get his nails done. “Gabby Daw...Casey.”
"DawCasey, is that one word or is there a hyphen in there somewhere?" he asked, he had heard the last name before, though he was not all that familiar with the context of the relationship, but it was clear that there had been a name change recently. “Don’t worry Appley, nice to meet you.” he grinned at his new name, "Same to you DawCasey." he replied with a nod. “Wait a second... Harris, you related to Stephanie Harris?” Peter just nodded, one thing about working in the same house as a family member was that it was like going to school with them. All through his grade school career if a teacher did not already know who he was related to, they always seemed to ask "Are you related to so and so Harris?", but those teachers were few and far between. By the time Peter was starting school everyone knew the heard of kids his parents were producing. "Yes, she is my baby sister by four months. We make up two of the ten siblings." he replied as he moved back to the fridge, remembering her earlier comment about there being better things in the fridge, Peter went hunting again, "I know, and I'd love a donut but my doctor says I need to eat healthier, and since there are not any donuts....apples will have to do. Want one?" he reached into the fridge and pulled out another apple. Gabby rolled her eyes at him, “Really, or are you just chickening out of it? Seriously you’d be welcome.” She offered not that guys were banned from ladies nights out though usually they had the guys nights out or just preferred to stay far away when it was happening. Who knew why? “Well you’ve no idea what you’re missing. Sitting there relaxing, probably with a glass of wine and just letting the world pass by. Then you come in here break the nail get on with it and go back to do it all over again.” She said grinning, even the thought of that right now seemed like a relaxing prospect for the future.
Married name, yes she was still getting used to it as she laughed. “Wish there was a hyphen but it’s Casey, just married so yeah still working out that kink.” She explained though when she would finally get around to being used to being a Casey she would never know. Even now when someone called her Mrs Casey it was strange as she assumed still that was Matt’s mother though that was a subject better left for another time. It seemed like they had just given each other nicknames before even working together which was a fun thing, it proved he could take a joke so yes maybe he was far from the crazy person she might have assumed.
She would be working with a Harris, oh that had gone so well for Truck she thought wondering how alike the Harris’ were. Her and her brother, yes they had things in common more in the way of their temper at times and a few other traits that were either seen as good or awful. Gabby took another drink as she almost choked for a second, “Wait ten? There’s ten of you?” She stated surprised by that, she had wanted to strangle her one brother a few times but another eight siblings she would never have made it out alive.
“They tell us all that, have they ever worked in a fire house. Healthy is hardly always the best option.” She stated though as a medic she had seen what unhealthy had done to people so it worked both ways. “Sure Appley, I’ll take one as long as it’s not the last one so you can have one too.” She said as she thought about it for a moment, “So what ambulance are you on today then Appley?” She asked, she was with twenty four though she knew there were a few others there now so it paid just to know who she was working with for the day.

There’s ten of you?”Peter nodded again, "Three older brothers and six younger sisters, I am the youngest of four." There was eight years between him and his older brother James, and two between him and Luke and Owen. "My parents had hoped I was going to be a girl, and they had supposedly planned on stopping after me but God laughed and proved them over wise." of course the exact opposite happened.
“They tell us all that, have they ever worked in a fire house. Healthy is hardly always the best option.” she was right, usually the quickest option was often the unhealthiest. "I know what you mean." he replied as he went back to the fridge for another two apples, taking them in his hand he walked back to the table and set one down in front of her as she called him Appley again. “So what ambulance are you on today then Appley?” of course she asked this right after he had taken a bite out of his apple. "I am currently assigned to 24, though lately I have had a hard time keeping a partner due to every ones love of being moved around all the time." Some people thought that it was because he was hard to work with, when honestly he had nothing to do with the problem at all, "What about you CaDawsey?" he asked in return.

Gabby was still finding it confusing every time someone called out for Casey she had to double check they meant the lieutenant and not herself, then again she could hardly imagine going back to Dawson now. It likely appeared corny but she felt like her life had taken a turn for the better or rather the fantastic this last few months. “Youngest of four, I know what it was like to be the youngest of one so I’m glad you’ve survived that.” She said knowing Antonio had hardly been the easiest to get along with when they were younger.
“God has his ways of working but at least they came out even, four and four.” She said having no idea how he dealt with seven other siblings. His parents must be great to have had eight children, Gabby could hardly imagine herself with one let alone eight though everyone had their own way of working things. Gabby just nodded to him when they spoke about food, it was hardly easy to be healthy when a call would interrupt dinner, lunch and breakfast which mean the fastest portable options were the best ones for working in there.
Gabby picked up the apple he set down in front of her as she smiled at him as she took a bite of the apple hearing that he was on twenty four as well. “Yeah there is a lot of that going around lately but I am sure you might have more luck.” Gabby said with a slight grin on her face when she heard him ask about her. “Well according to my paperwork today I get to be assigned to ... surprise... 24 as well so I guess we’re partners for today Appley. Nice to meet you.” She said as she waved at him in an effort not to get apple absolutely everywhere.

Peter grinned, it was about time he got a new partner and was not stuck hanging around the house doing busy work and or anything else that needed to be done, not that he minded, but there was only so many times someone could do laundry, sort mail or file reports before they got bored with it. He hated sitting still for long periods of time. "Do you have any variation of your name you don't like being called?" he asked as he took a bite from his apple, "Gabs, Gabby, Gabriea, Mrs. CaDawsey?" with a bunch of sisters with an array of names, he knew what they liked being called and what they hated being called. "I personally prefer Peter, never been a fan of Pete or any of the variations." Steph called him Saturn, but that was a special circumstance with her being his sibling and all.

Gabby had mixed feelings about being back on paramedic duty, it was the safer option of the two she had done and she had a family to think about. If was a second chance at a lot of things but her partner was different, Gabby had gone through a few herself though hopefully Harris would stick or she would stick with Harris depending on how things went. Gabby raised her brow at him asking about name variations. “You can drop the Mrs and Gabriea but other than that I’m fine with those. I don’t mind really I guess.” She said having never really thought much about what she was comfortable with being called.
“Okay so Peter Appley it is, nice to meet you and I look forward to working with you.” She said grinning for a moment as she thought about things. “So what are your feelings on practical jokes?” She asked wanting to figure that out before she gave the guy a heart attack about anything or rather did something to someone else and landed him in the middle of it too by default. “And do you have any do’s and do not’s for our new working wheels?” Gabby asked wondering if he had any specifics to that at all too.
Notes: It's a great post.

"Also no smoking, talk shows on the radio, lasagna, peanuts and birds allowed either." he added quickly, "Once had a bird fly into the ambulance...it refused to leave and decided to leave some droppings on several things before finally leaving." that had been a fun time cleaning everything. Gabby chuckled; well at least he liked a good joke that could be useful as she wondered which one of her fire house scheme she could pull him into. Then again to say she had a list, well it was more accurate than anything else. “Good good, well just stand by for the next jokes because we’ll get you involved too on the good side though.” She said as to not scare him off too much. “Okay no touching snacks and yes I clean up my mess so don’t worry on that account. I’ll make sure to keep any half eaten snacks off the list though.”
Gabby was more of a general meal person, yes she snacked though her idea of a snack at times could be a meal. Gabby listened to him make his list, smoking no that was no issue then and talk shows, they just made her agitated and angry so she was glad for that to be out of the picture too. “Okay so no birds I can promise that but what’s wrong with Lasagne and peanuts? Are you allergic?” She asked wanting to know if he might drop in the middle of shift due to a peanut allergy. Double the epi pen count she thought just as a precaution.
“Okay Appley, no allergies I know of, coffee order needs to be black and plenty of sugar and pet peeves. Talk shows, going around the house because I prefer the direct route. Fire-fighters thinking we are just window decoration just in case, no shoe off in the ambulance and always wear your seat belt.” Gabby listed guessing that if she did find something that was a pet peeve she would out right and tell Peter without a second thought to it. She had never been great with the subtleties of life. “Warning for you though, I say what I think and don’t hold back. Can you live with that?” She asked him wondering how he would take it.

Peter let out a low whistle and slowly shook his head, "You drive a hard bargain, I don't know if I can handle that..." he joked. It was like having Meg and Steph rolled into one person, "But I think I can manage, I like people who speak their minds, it is better than keeping it in and leaving me wondering." he added. "As for the peanuts and lasagna; almost everyone is allergic, so it is best to be safe and not have them around, and lasagna, well I don't really have anything against it, I just like tossing it out there sometimes to confuse people. Did you ever notice that lasagna is just pasta cake?" he smiled, he had a feeling he was going to like his new partner. Peter leaned back in his chair, "Speaking of lasagna, that sounds like a good idea for dinner..." of course he had no idea when dinner would actually be for him thanks to the sometimes crazy schedules they ran.

Gabby smirked as she spoke, “Awww don’t tell me you are sensitive Appley?” She asked grinning though if the other Harris was anything to go by she doubted there would be anything that he was unable to handle. “I’m glad you think so because there won’t be anything you’re left wondering about. I’ll tell you straight, never worry about that.” Gabby stated, she knew she was hardly everyone’s cup of tea but when was there ever time to go around the houses and not say what she thought. It simply made sense in the job they were in, no guarantees but the one thing she knew was she could always say what she thought.
He had a point about the peanuts she thought before she laughed about the lasagne. “It works, confused me but then if you did have something against it then we might have a problem.” She said grinning as she chuckled when he asked about it being a cake. “Oooh pasta cake that is heaven, layers of meat, pasta and sauce with cheese what more could anyone want from life. There’s cake and then there’s ‘cake’.” She said nodding as the thought of food was making her hungry, yes she had just eaten but still food was food to her.
“Now see that is greatest idea, it does sound like a great idea for dinner.” She said glancing around, “Wonder who’s on cooking duty today, would do no harm to point them in the right direction of the greatest food source.” She said as she sat back though if they did manage to get anywhere near a pasta cake there would likely be a call right before the first fork full or in the middle of it. It was just the way things went as she was a lot more relaxed about her new partner.
